Berlin has become one of Europe's most modern and attractive capitals, and after the reunion of East and West Berlin in 1990 Berlin Mitte became the heart of the city.
From 1961 - 1990 East and West Berlin were separated by the Berlin Wall and the neighborhood Mitte was located in East Berlin. In 2001 the city council decide to merged the district with the two western districts of Wedding and Tiergarten under the name Mitte. During the Cold War
Checkpoint Charlie was the border between Kreuzberg on the western side and Mitte in the East.
Berlin Mitte is the absolute heart of the city and this is where you find sights like Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Alexanderplatz and the Reichstag. Today Mitte and Kreuzberg are very popular areas among visitors in Berlin and both places are among Europe's most modern and innovative areas.
In Berlin, there are plenty of good restaurants and with its multi-ethnic society, then you can basically find all types of cuisine represented in Mitte. This means that virtually everyone can find a restaurant that they like. Italian. Turkish, Japanese, Arabic and of course the German kitchen with Sauerkraut and a big beer can be found in the heart of the city. Note that prices in Berlin are very reasonable and much cheaper compared to other large European cities like Copenhagen, Florence and London.
The river Spree runs also through the Mitte district and it is here that you can find the beautiful Berliner Dom, which is the Cathedral in the city. Beside the Cathedral you will also find Museumsinsel which contains Pergamon Museum, Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie and the Bode Museum. On a good day you can enjoy the sun and the parks that are situated around the Cathedral, the river Spree and
Museum.
