Rome offers many attractions, the Coliseum, Pantheon and Vatican, to name three. The Italian capital is a perfect city break destination. You can visit all the sights and monuments in Rom, but if you haven’t eaten in pizza in Dar Poeta, then you haven’t properly visited Rome.
Dar Poeta, located in the Trastevere neighbourhood, is arguably the best pizzeria in Rome. During a visit to the city in November 2011 I was searching eagerly on the Internet to find the where to eat the best pizza in town and believe me there were plenty of good suggestions.
During my six days stay I tried various restaurants; of course Italy is renowned for pasta and pizza, so if you can’t find the world's best pizza there, where can you find it?
I will admit that I was not disappointed; they really do make great pizza in Rome. But when a local Roman recommended that I try Pizzeria Dar Poeta in Trastevere, then my pizza experience reached new heights.
Dar Poeta is one of the most famous Pizzerias in Rome, amongst tourists and locals. The restaurant is mentioned in several guidebooks and it is true to say that all the hype about Dar Poeta is worth it.
The restaurant is open daily from 12.00 midday and closes late. The first two tries at getting a table was impossible; the restaurant was fully booked. In fact when I past by one Saturday evening at 8pm there were somewhere between 40-50 people waiting to get a table!
So a word of advice - if one day you find yourself in Rome and want to try the city’s best Pizzeria, just make sure you arrive early.
I finally managed to get a table one Sunday evening at 6pm. Early but absolutely, without doubt, worth the wait. Dar Poeta make amazing quality, wood fired at reasonable prices. In addition they serve good, cheap red wine. Italian of course!
I ordered a pizza which has the same name as the restaurant, recommended to me by the friendly waitress. The Dar Poeta contains mozzarella, courgette (zucchini), salami, heaps of garlic and chilli and the taste? Pure heaven. In addition, a good glass of red wine to wash down the pizza, all for just € 12.00.
The restaurant is located on Vicolo del Bologna 45 in Trastevere, Rome's most charming neighbourhood, with its narrow streets, bars, cafes and cosy restaurants.
